Mini-Kids at College - Durant (June: Pick one week)
Continuing Education and Smart Start Durant are offering Kids at College activities in Durant. This program is for children who will turn 4 (by December 08) through 6 (entering the first grade in August 08). A local Kindergarten teacher from Washington Irving Elementary School, Joell Wiley, is scheduled to teach this Mini-Kids at College Series. A representative from Continuing Education will greet the children on 5th street in front of the University Center Building. They will be meeting in UC Room 215.
It’s “Bear”lievable!
Students will be hearing stories about different types of bears as shared through Eric Carle books. Children will have hands-on activities, create art projects, and play games.
Monster Mania
Students will be learning life lessons along with hearing stories, dancing to music, playing games, singing songs, and hands-on activities.
Our Zoo Friends
Students will be hearing stories from children’s author, Eric Carle. Through re-enactment and hands-on activities, art, and songs, children will be introduced to animals who live in the zoo.

Continuing Education and Smart Start Durant are offering Kids at College activities in Durant in July. This program is for children who are 4 (at the time of the class) through 6 (entering the first grade
in August 08). Parents are encouraged to enroll a child in all three programs to be held over two weeks. Otherwise, parents may pick and choose which sessions to attend. If the child is registered in advanced for all 3 programs, the registration fee is $69. T-shirts are $7 extra.A representative from Continuing Education will be on the street to gather your child and take to the classroom at 8:30 a.m. They will be back on the street to deliver your child to the car at the completion of the day.

MINI-KIDS AT COLLEGE: Let's Write a Story: aGES 4 - 6
Do you have a storyteller in your house? Capture that creativity! Each child will author and illustrate his/her own story book. These books will be cherished for years. This will be an incredibly rewarding experience. Each child will leave the class with two bound copies of his/her book - one to keep and one to share. The class size is limited to allow for more teacher-student "author" interaction.

MINI-KIDS AT COLLEGE: READING ALOUD: AGES 4 - 6
Research and practice show that one simple activity - reading aloud - is the best way to prepare children for learning to read and to keep them reading as they learn and grow. Reading aloud helps your child develop the language skills that he will use in school and throughout his/her life.
We will gather around and laugh at silly characters, root for heroes, and wag our fingers at villains. This class will help your child develop a lifelong appreciation for reading.

KIDS AT COLLEGE - DURANT: KRAFTY KIDS KORNER (2nd - 6th grades)
Children will rotate from one class to another. One class will be creating krafts with the wonders of nature. An appreciation of our beautiful earth will be provided through this program. Then children will be able to create paper Mache objects or learn about origami. Children will leave with their own piñata at the completion of this program. Additionally, children will be able to create several interesting keepsake items.

KIDS AT COLLEGE - DURANT: Paper crafting & Scrapping (2nd - 6th grades)
In this program, youth will be creating items such as a pocket planner, backpack/luggage tag and a unique mini-scrapbook; designing and making special occasion cards, making their own card organizer and, of course, more scrapping pages. And, scrappers will be given the opportunity to enhance their scrapbook page creativity. Theresa Welch is returning to provide this fun and creative program. Students need to bring a small list of supplies to class which includes 12x12 scrapbook with page protectors, paper trimmer, scissors, dry adhesive, ruler, embellishments and any extras they want.

Kids at College: Appreciating Literature (entering 4th - 6th grades)
Monday: Mystery/Folklore
Tuesday: Realistic/Historical

Thursday: Nonfiction/Poetry
The class will not only look at the "what" -the written products, but also at the "why's" and "how's." Each day there will be reading of each genre, then have a discussion of the writer's goals and strategies. Discussions of personal responses to a piece of literature will be included, as well as providing an opportunity to gain an understanding of the formal elements of the genre. This class will help develop the students into more insightful readers, more concise critics, and more successful readers and writers. Writing about our lives can be so enjoyable, perhaps because when we write about ourselves, we write about what we know best. In writing his/her autobiography, your teenager will develop writing skills and gain a sense of accomplishment. By writing their own stories, students can learn so much about who they are and who they would like to be.

SCRAP BOOKING AND PAPER CRAFTS (7th - 10th Grades)
Put your creativity to the test in this scrapping and paper craft class. If you enjoy scrap booking or would like to start, this is your opportunity to enhance or develop your skills. Participants are required to bring their own supplies. Theresa Welch is returning to provide this fun and creative program. Students need to bring a small list of supplies to class which includes 12x12 scrapbook with page protectors, paper trimmer, scissors, dry adhesive, ruler, embellishments and any extras they want. If you are new to scraping, you will want to purchase a scrapbook kit.

Horseback Riding
DEADLINE TO ENROLL May 16th.
Whether your child is a beginner or an experienced horseback rider, he or she will benefit from these classes. Participants get hands-on experience in all phases of horsemanship. Topics include: horse care, grooming, preparation, and riding with an emphasis on controlling the horse. Class sizes are limited. Register early to ensure training for your child. There is a waiver requiring parental signature prior to participants being allowed to work with horses.

Kids at College - Durant Science Camp: Spheres of Science: 3rd - 6th grades Students entering the 3rd -6th grade in Fall 08 will want to enroll early for this fun-filled, exciting scientific camp. Register your child today for this interactive, hands-on scientific program. In addition to the classroom and computer lab work, students will be gathering data outdoors. Your child will be a scientist by contributing data to the collection that scientists use to study the earth’s atmosphere (clouds, weather, forecasting and hurricanes). Students will be learning about the geosphere including rocks, soils, earthquakes and more. Additionally, participants will study the hydrosphere (water quality) and the cryosphere(glaciers). And, finally, students will be learning about DNA, micro life, and taxonomies of the biosphere. |

Participants will want to bring sunshades, hats, bug spray, and sunscreen to the fun-filled, exciting scientific camp. There is a break mid-morning; students may want to bring coins for the vending machines.

Robotics/Engineering Academy
Ages 12 - 15
Individuals who should attend include: Youth 12-15 years old who have an interest or aptitude in: Computer Technology, Programming, Science, Engineering, Math. Robotics is a unique educational tool to inspire young people and to encourage them to be technically creative. Computer science and engineering merge to produce machines that can perform a variety of tasks from manufacturing to exploration. In this academy, students cover basic physical engineering topics such as simple machines and locomotion. They also survey principles of electrical engineering including sensor feedback, circuits, signals, and infrared communications. Students also learn fundamental concepts in computer science, including algorithms, sequential control flow, and the use of Boolean operators.
Course Objectives:
^ Identify and demonstrate major principles of programming.
^ Identify and demonstrate how input, output and processing occurs within a program.
^ Build robot and program with computer interface.
^ Present an algorithmic solution as executed by a robot.
^ Explain the design of the robot and programming to execute the solution
