American Red Cross Swim Activities
Guardstart Lifeguard Certification Water Safety Instructor Certification ----------------

(Ages 6-36 Months) Parents must be in the water with the children for the Infant/Toddler program only. Infants learn to adjust to the water by learning to float, blow bubbles, entering and exiting the pool safely, and experiencing the buoyancy of the life jacket. Toddlers become comfortable jumping in the water from the side of the pool, learn to float front and back, roll over, change positions from vertical to prone and move their arms. Instructor: American Red Cross Certified Lifeguard and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. Additional sections may be added, call for more information. WATER FACT: Infants and young children who are not yet toilet-trained should wear a cloth diaper covered by a snug fitting rubber pant or a swim diaper. Regular disposable diapers can be both a health and safety hazard and should not be worn. Swim diapers may be purchased at the pool while supplies last.

LEVEL 1: PRIMARY SKILLS (Ages 5 -8)Your child will receive an orientation to the aquatic environment. The instructor teaches elementary skills to prepare children for developing more advanced skills as they progress through the “Learn to Swim Program.” Water safety rules are included. If your child is 9 or older without previous swimming lessons, this is the place to start. Your child will explore the deep water, learn rhythmic breathing, and perform combined strokes on stomach and back. Children will also become familiar with rescue breathing. Participant explore the basic rules of safe diving, learn the front and back crawl, the elementary back stroke, and how to tread water. Participants must be prepared to be in the deep end of the pool during this class. Class size is limited. Additional sections may be added, call for more information.

Levels 4 - 6 develops confidence in the strokes, provides further coordination and refinement of strokes and aids the students to swim with efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with "menu" options. Each of these options focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, such as Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training. GUARDSTART (Includes Level 4 - 6) Students will learn facts, skills, and attitudes needed to be a lifeguard. This course is different from Lifeguard Certification, but it does help children to begin thinking like a lifeguard. |
