Symphonic Band
Under the direction of David Christy, the Symphonic Band is the elite concert group that is open by competitive audition to any University musician. Meeting in the spring semester, members of the band include not only music majors, but also talented musicians from many departments on campus. The group numbers between 45 and 50 and tours the Texoma region every other year and performs the finest contemporary band literature as well as marches and transcriptions. This premier concert group has performed with guest composers and conductors such as James Curnow, David Holsinger, W. Francis McBeth, Robert Sheldon, and Robert W. Smith, and presents two campus concerts each spring.
Concert Band
The SOSU Concert Band is open to any University student. This group performs band literature that features a variety of music and provides the opportunity for all students to experience the enjoyment of playing in a quality ensemble. The concert this spring will be in Montgomery Auditorium on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:30 P. M., and will provide the opportunity for several student conductors to display their abilities. The Concert Band meets Monday and Wednesday during the spring semester from 12:00 to 1:00. Some students who play in the Symphonic Band choose to play in this group as well on a secondary instrument. With the increased numbers of instrumental music majors in our program, this band should continue to increase in size and quality.
