School Counseling
Statement of Objectives
The Master of Education degree in School Counseling is designed to prepare individuals with an academic background in education to assume the role of school counselor in elementary and secondary schools. The program enables counselor trainees to develop the ability to facilitate the growth and development of young people through training in guidance program development, consultation, career development, and intervention strategies in a muli-cultural context.
Students will gain competencies in the following areas:
1. Human Development
2. Intervention
3. Program Development and Administration
4. Career Development
5. Appraisal
Program Admission Requirement
I. The applicant must be admitted to the Graduate School.
II. The applicant should be eligible for or hold a valid teaching certificate.
III. Students will be required to choose a specialization area commensurate with their teaching certificate.
Retention
Due to the critical nature of the school counselor's role, continued enrollment in the program is predicated on the student maintaining an appropriate level of social and emotional maturity, the ability to communicate effectively, and other personal attributes believed by the faculty to be necessary for success in the counseling profession. Additionally, the student must earn a grade of "B" or better in Counseling Practicum I to be eligible to enroll in Practicum II.
