Honors Courses
Contrary to popular belief, honors courses are not typically more difficult than other college courses. They are, however, designed to provide an opportunity for honors students to take a more in-depth study of the subject. To make this possible, enrollment in each course is limited. The courses are generally more discussion-oriented, and in some instances attendance at campus cultural events will be included as a requirement of the course.
It is expected that honors students will earn the same grade point average for their honors coursework as they do for other courses. For example, an honors student earning an A in a regular section of a course would likely earn an A in an honors section of the same course. Grade point average anxiety should not be a significant factor to consider in applying for the honors program. Students who are committed to achieving a first-class education in their undergraduate experience at Southeastern and who are motivated to pursue an honors degree designation should carefully consider the opportunities offered by the Southeastern Honors Program.
The Honors Program Curriculum
An honors curriculum that consists of special courses in general education and independent study in an academic area is required of all honors scholars. Each semester, three to six hours of honors courses are required, as demonstrated in the following table.

Southeastern honors students are required to complete their honors courses according to the above schedule in order to maintain membership in good standing in the Honors Program.
Should there be a schedule conflict with a key required course in one's major field, students must obtain permission in writing from Dr. Lisa Coleman to postpone the honors course until the following year. Failure to obtain written approval to postpone any required Honors course will put your scholarship in jeopardy for future semesters. Call 580-745-2771 to make an appointment.
