Center offers basic skills classes in English, math, and reading.
Below is a brief description of each course. For more detailed information,
i.e. syllabus, assignments, etc., click on the course title.
Pre-College
English (English 0123):
Pre-College English is a study of composition, grammar and usage. (There
is a heavy emphasis on grammar and the mechanics of standard written English.)
This course is required of students who lack high school credits in English
and those who do not pass entrance examination; it does not fulfill general
education requirements in grammar and composition.)
Developmental Reading
(Reading 0123):
Developmental reading improves students' comprehension and retention of
written material. This course incorporates critical reading, vocabulary
building skills, and note-taking skills. This course is required
of students who do not pass entrance examination; this course is a prerequisite
to history classes.
Intermediate
Algebra (Math 0123):
Intermediate algebra is a course for students who need to review algebra
skills. Topics include real number operations, linear equations and inequalities,
polynomial operations, rational expressions, and radical expressions.
This course or MATH 0114 is required for students with low ACT and/or
CPT scores in math. (Students who score at or above the 35th
percentile on the CPT can take this course.)
Elementary
Algebra (Math 0114):
Elementary algebra is a course for students with little or no previous
algebra background. Topics include arithmetic review, real number operations,
linear equations and inequalities, polynomial operations, rational expressions,
and square roots. This course or MATH 0123 is required for students with
low ACT and/or CPT scores in math. (Students who score below the 35th
percentile on the CPT should take this course.)
Concepts
in Science (Science 0124): Concepts in science is a course
for students who need to review secondary level concepts in Physics, Chemistry,
and the Biological Sciences; with laboratory. This course is required
for students with low ACT and/or CPT scores in science. For further
