textbook: The Least You Should
Know About English, Form C, Glazier/Wilson, Eighth Edition
Welcome to the Learning Center.
The Center's hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday
through Friday.
English 0123
meets either MWF or TTh or one night a week at your scheduled time.
Due to the nature of the course, attendance is necessary
in order to obtain a passing grade; there are no excused absences.
If you miss more than six MWF classes, four TTH classes, or two night
classes, you may be asked to drop the class. You may also
be asked to drop the class if your averaged grade drops to failing at certain
class drop date deadlines that occur over the course of the semester.
Please note that attendance is taken every class meeting.
This course includes the mechanics
of written English and practice in composition. There
are four 100-point module tests, four out-of-class essays, and two in-class
essays.
You must have a 70% average on these ten items including a 70% average
on the four module tests in order to take the
comprehensive exam. You must score 70%
or better on the comprehensive exam. Once
you have passed the comprehensive exam, you must also score at
the 50th percentile on the College Placement Test
(CPT) to leave the class.
You may attempt
each module test and the comprehensive exam 2 times on or before
the deadline set by your instructor. If you do not pass the first
attempt with a 70 or better, you may be required to work through the
text materials again and you may be required to work with a tutor
before retaking the test. You may not take a test more than 2 times. Retakes must be taken on your own time. You must pass each test before the next scheduled test
date. If you have not passed a test before the deadline, you will
waive any further attempts and accept the highest score recorded before
that date.
Essays must be completed on
or before the due date. All essays must be typed, double-spaced,
on one side of the paper, and with one inch margins all around.
The final copy of your essay should be a product of which you can be
justifiably proud. No late papers will be accepted. If you
must miss class, make arrangements to have someone bring your paper
to the Learning Center by 5:00 p.m. that day or FAX your paper to the
Admissions Office (745-7472). WARNING! Do not miss class
the day an assignment is due just because it is not completed.
Your instructor and the tutors will advise you about the organization,
development, and editing of your papers. You are allowed one rewrite
on out- of-class essays
If
you are having trouble with your work, tutors
are available Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to assist you.
This service is free of charge.
