Required textbook: Reading for Results, Flemming, Ninth Edition
The staff in the Learning Center are very interested in helping you succeed in
this class and in the rest of your college career. We
are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you need additional
tutoring outside of class, we have staff available to assist you at
all times during these hours of operation.
You are also welcome to use the Center's other resources during these
times.
Class
attendance is very important; there are no excused absences. You
will receive an attendance grade for
this course. The attendance policy will be explained in detail
by your instructor during the first week of class. Your attendance
grade will be averaged with your homework grades at the end of the semester.
According
to the Board of Regents, no student in developmental courses may make
a grade lower than a C; therefore, you must make an average of 70 percent
on all your course work. This work
includes a midterm, a final, six vocabulary tests, one essay/response
paper, critiques of new sources, daily homework and/or quizzes
from the textbook, and a history lesson. Once you have reached
this average, you must also score at the
50th percentile on the College Placement
Test to pass the class.
You have two attempts to pass the midterm, the final, and the six
vocabulary tests; however, all of these attempts must be taken before
the next scheduled test day. In other words, if you have a test
on Aug. 21, and you fail it, you are eligible to take two more attempts
that would raise your grade. If your next scheduled test was set
for Aug. 28, you could take this remaining attempt anytime
(except for class time!) up until the late afternoon of Aug. 27.
We give you this extra attempt so that you can master this material.
Take advantage of it!
The text
for the class is Reading for Results. The midterm and the
final are taken from this text, and your instructor
will give quizzes based on this reading. All assignments must be turned
in no later than 5 p.m. on their respective due dates in order to
receive full credit.
If you fail your first attempt at the essay, you will have the chance
for one rewrite to improve your grade.
