Todd Downing


1902-1974


Todd Downing was born March 29, 1902 to a prominent Choctaw family, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1924, and got his M. A. there in 1929. During a forty year career as an author, Downing wrote 10 mystery novels, including The Cat Screams, Vultures in the Sky and Night Over Mexico. He had language-teaching assignments at Temple University in Philadelphia, and at Massanutten Academy in Woodstock, Virginia in the 1950’s, and taught foreign language at Atoka High School. He was professor of Choctaw Language in the language department at Southeastern Oklahoma State University when he died on January 9, 1974.
