Michael Miles Biography |
Dr. Michael A. Miles is a unique brand of musician whose career has led him to all parts of the world in the role of a variety of musical positions. He serves as Chairman of the Department of Fine Arts at Southeastern Oklahoma State University where he teaches all undergraduate and graduate conducting courses and directs the SE Jazz Ensemble, recognized by the Oklahoma Legislature as the "Official Jazz Ambassadors of Oklahoma." Dr. Miles has directed and conducted a variety of instrumental ensembles, from brass bands to symphony orchestras, and in 2006 received the SE Faculty Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has served as Music Director/Conductor of the Oklahoma Youth Symphonies and as guest conductor with the Xinghia Consevatory Orchestra of Guangzhou, China, Vidin Philharmonic (Vidin, Bulgaria), Springfield Symphony (Springfield, MO), Tulsa Philharmonic (Tulsa, Oklahoma), Tallahassee Symphony (Tallahassee, FL), and Oklahoma Youth Orchestra. In 1995 Dr. Miles was appointed Musical Conductor for the Oklahoma Shakespeare Festival, and in 1997 served as Music Director for the festival.
As a trumpet performer he has earned trumpet performance degrees from the Hartt School of Music, Florida State University, and the University of Kentucky. Along the way he has performed with dozens of symphony orchestras as featured soloist and principal trumpet.
