Cody Bryant of Idabel and Charlee Potts of Haworth have been awarded the Tom and Betty Bagwell Scholarships.

The students will each receive a $1,000 savings bond and are encouraged to study mathematics, science, and English for six credit hours.

Elementary Education Department Receives Donation

The Elementary Education Department at the McCurtain County campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University was the recipient of a donation of reading sets from Pearson Publications last week. The donation includes complete sets of teaching materials for reading education from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade and encompasses more than 100 textbooks and supplemental materials. The donation is valued at several thousand dollars.

The teaching materials will contribute significantly to the Elementary Education program on the McCurtain County campus, Assistant Professor Barbara McClanahan reported. “Having access to current editions of reading sets will give our teacher education students a deeper understanding of how to use these materials in their own classrooms."

The reading sets, consisting of student reading textbooks, teachers’ editions, assessments, guidelines for English Language Learners, technology implementations, and much more, were donated by the Scott Foresman division of Pearson through their Sales Representative, Fran Parkhill. Each set of grade-level materials is stored in its own portable yellow cart for easy accessibility.

Several students who were able to review the materials mentioned their value compared to what had previously been available. “What an amazing tool!” current teacher education student Melissa Shelton commented. “The Scott Foresman up-to-date teacher manuals are significantly more useable than the manuals we had to work with last semester.” Student Michelle Tomlinson agreed with her about the usefulness of the current materials, and fellow student Tara Treadway anticipated their helpfulness as she completes her teacher education program.

"This is a real plus for our campus, and we are very grateful to Ms. Parkhill for arranging for this donation,” said McClanahan. “A relationship with Pearson is a great start for our revitalized program, and we look forward to making even more connections in the educational community."

SOSU-MCC Student Teaches Drug Awareness Program

Shelly Reich, a Southeastern Oklahoma State University student at the McCurtain County campus, is one of six instructors in the Community Oriented Proactive Narcotics Education and Training (COPNET) program.

The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) is in charge of the program, which is designed to teach drug awareness classes to Oklahoma’s children, youth, adults and school faculty members and administrators. The instructors are available for visits to schools, church or youth groups throughout the state.

The OBN has six instructors, with three in the Oklahoma City area and one each in Murray, Pontotoc and McCurtain counties.

The OBN and Americorps were searching for 20 students at junior, senior or graduate levels in state-certified colleges to become instructors across the state. Reich was a student in Sociology Theory when she learned of the COPNET program through instructor Carol Howell (pictured above with Reich) and academic advisor Bruce King. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in general studies.

Requirements include having a grade-point average of at least 3.0; having letters of recommendation from professors; passing a background check and polygraph examination; and conducting an interview with the Director of the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, the Training Agent and the COPNET Project Director.
