Attorney General Edmondson, Senator Crutchfield To Speak At SOSU Commencement On December 17

Southeastern Oklahoma State University will hold Fall 2005 Commencement Ceremonies on Saturday, December 17, at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., in the Bloomer Sullivan Gymnasium. A reception honoring graduates and their families will be held in the SOSU Visual and Performing Arts Center (VPAC) from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Since seating is limited in the gymnasium, there will be two ceremonies by degrees. Oklahoma State Attorney General Drew Edmondson will address the 10 a.m. commencement, while Senator Johnnie Crutchfield, a Southeastern alumnus, will speak at the 1 p.m. ceremony.

Attorney General Drew Edmondson

Drew Edmondson was elected Attorney General in 1994, and in 1998 became only the second Attorney General in Oklahoma history to win re-election without opposition. He was re-elected in 2002 to a third term.

Edmondson served as the 2002 – 2003 President of the National Association of Attorneys General after a two-year stint as the Chair of the Consumer Protection Committee and Chair of the Southern Region of Attorneys General.

Before his election as Attorney General, Edmondson was elected, unopposed, to three consecutive terms as Muskogee County District Attorney in 1982, 1986 and 1990. He served as president of the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association and was selected as Outstanding District Attorney for the State of Oklahoma in 1985 and the Outstanding Death Penalty Prosecutor in the 9th and 10th Circuits.

Edmondson served one term in the Oklahoma Legislature before entering the University of Tulsa School of Law in 1976. His undergraduate teaching degree is from Northeastern State University, Tahlequah, which he attended after graduating from Muskogee Central High School.

Johnnie Crutchfield was elected to represent Senate District 14 in southern Oklahoma in 1998. He came to the legislature with extensive experience in local government, first as a city councilman, and then as mayor of Ardmore. Crutchfield is the Chair of the Appropriations Committee and is Chair of the Appropriation Subcommittee on Education. He is also a member of the following committees: Agriculture and Rural Development, Education, Energy and Environment, Rules, Transportation, and Veterans and Military Affairs.

Crutchfield holds a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and a master’s degree in Education both from Southeastern State College (now Southeastern Oklahoma State University). He also did his post-graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. The Senator was raised on a cattle ranch in the oil producing region of western Carter County, where he graduated from Wilson High School in 1965. He currently owns cattle ranches in both Carter and Pittsburgh Counties.

During his time in the Senate, Crutchfield has been honored with numerous awards. In 2001, he was named Legislator of the Year by the Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association (OIPA). He was honored again in 2002, when the Oklahoma State Troopers Association named him Legislator of the Year.

He serves on various boards and is a member of several associations, including the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, and the Southeastern Oklahoma State University Alumni Board of Directors.
