Beginning this fall, students will have the opportunity to earn a degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University without, in many cases, ever having to leave the Grayson County College campus in Denison, Texas.

Thanks to this unique collaboration between the two schools, students at the GCC main campus in Denison will have access to a 4-year degree in Elementary Education and also access to the core courses in the Master’s of Education program.

“This two-state partnership between Southeastern Oklahoma State University and Grayson County College represents a unique and historic opportunity to provide better access for our students in the Texoma region,” said Southeastern president Dr. Glen D. Johnson. “We believe that this partnership has great potential for the future and certainly will provide our students in the north Texas area with a “win-win” situation and a more seamless opportunity to receive their degree.”

“Grayson County College looks forward to the increased access that this long-awaited partnership will bring to the citizenry of north Texas,” said Grayson president Dr. Alan Scheibmeir. “We are pleased to be a part of making these advanced degrees available on our Main Campus.”

The courses will be taught on-site at Grayson by SOSU instructors and adjunct instructors, supplemented by online instruction.

Because the program is in its beginning stages, enrollment will be limited to the first 30 students who are accepted for admission into the Elementary Education or Master’s of Education cohort. A cohort is defined as a group of students who progress through the program together.

Elementary Education classes will be offered in a Monday-Friday late afternoon/evening format, while the M.Ed courses will be available on Saturday.

Anticipated growth in the programs could result in additional cohorts being added in Spring 2006.

This collaborative effort has received approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Grayson County College Board of Trustees, the Board of Regents of Oklahoma Colleges and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

SOSU and GCC officials have been working together on this project for almost five years.

Founded in 1909 and based in Durant, Southeastern now has a branch campus in McCurtain County in Oklahoma, serves higher education centers in Ardmore and McAlester, and delivers aviation programs in Durant, at Tinker AFB, and at Oklahoma City Community College.
