Call for Submissions
Southeastern Oklahoma State University is offering a prize of $500 for the winning proposal for a new mascot for its sporting events and athletic teams. Earlier this spring, Southeastern adopted a new sports nickname, the Savage Storm, in order to be in compliance with new NCAA regulations regarding Native American mascots, logos, and nicknames. In July and August the University held a competition for a new fight song to support its sporting events. On August 15, the University unveiled a new logo for the sporting activities. The Savage Storm nickname refers to storms that are a part of life in the great plains of mid–America, and the southwest. Such storms are often devastating, strong, surprising, and ferocious events. Mascot submissions should reflect the sporting spirit of Southeastern’s athletic teams, and ideally the new mascot will have a recognizable linkage to Southeastern’s nickname, Savage Storm, and its new sports logo. The mascot may be any entity such as an animal, cartoon figure, humor–evoking character, or other idea that would appeal to spectators and characterize the sporting spirit of the University. To be considered, mascot proposals should be submitted as a picture or drawing in full color. A written description of the mascot may be helpful to the screening committee, as well as a statement that describes the linkage between the proposed mascot and Southeastern’s nickname and logo. The winning mascot entry will become the sole property of Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Copyrighted ideas or figures are not eligible for consideration.
The deadline for receiving submissions is October 5, 2006. All submissions must include a name and address of a contact person, including phone and email. A list of finalists will be notified by October 12, 2006. The finalists’ submissions will be reviewed during the fall 2006 semester at SOSU’s Homecoming, Saturday, October 14, and the winning mascot will be selected in December 2006.
