Press Release Date: 08-19-2005

For the third time in the past five years, Southeastern Oklahoma State University is the highest ranked public regional university in the state of Oklahoma, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2006 edition of America’s Best Colleges.

SOSU also held this ranking in the 2002 and 2004 America’s Best Colleges editions. The rankings, when released, are based on the previous academic school year’s data.

Rankings from the 2006 edition were released on August 19. “This is a tremendous honor for Southeastern Oklahoma State University,” said Southeastern president Dr. Glen D. Johnson. “It reflects the quality of our academic programs offered at Southeastern. Our faculty, staff, students, and alumni should take great pride in this ranking. As an institution, we are committed to continuing this tradition of excellence.”

Southeastern is ranked in the “Western Universities–Master’s: Tier 3 category.” The institutions in this category provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs. The 572 universities in this category are ranked within four geographic areas -North, South, Midwest, and West.

The annual rankings are based upon a number of academic excellence indicators, including graduation rates, freshman retention rates, class sizes, student/faculty ratio, percentage of full time faculty, acceptance rate, freshman in top 25% of their high school class, alumni giving rates, and peer ranking.

U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings of colleges and universities are designed to offer comprehensive data gathered from many sources to be utilized by prospective students and their parents as a tool to assess the quality and value of the nation’s educational institutions.
