Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s Musical Arts Series and the Red River Arts Council will present “Proteus 7” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.

Proteus 7 is an ensemble of brass, wind and percussion instruments. The group offers a refreshing insight to chamber music with its dynamic, creative and free-ranging approach to styles and repertoire.

The ensemble is equally at home from Bach to Bacharach. The first group to mix the captivating combination of trumpet, flugelhorn, woodwind, trombone, tuba and percussion, Proteus 7 is creating a new repertoire of original works and arrangements.

Proteus 7 features Anthony DiLorenzo and Geoffrey Hardcastle on trumpet/flugelhorn; Paul McCandless, woodwinds; Hans Bohn and Scott Hartman, trombones, Matthew Gaunt, tuba; and F. Feza Zweifel, percussion.

Members of the group perform on Broadway, record for television and motion pictures and can be heard in major concert halls throughout the world. As exclusive recording artists for Dorian Records, these seven players bring the tonal palette of a symphony orchestra, the excitement of a big band and the intimacy of a chamber ensemble to both their recordings and concerts. Recordings include the critically acclaimed For Your Ears Only, Cha Cha Lounge, Bernstein Tribute, and Dracula, the Seduction.

DiLorenzo is an Emmy award-winning composer who has performed as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops.

Hardcastle is active as a performer and teacher. He has held the position of second trumpet with the Cleveland Orchestra and performed with numerous other orchestras.

McCandless has played an integral role in the ensemble sound of the original Paul Winter Consort and the relentlessly innovative quartet, OREGON.

Bohn is a member of several orchestras, including the Boston Ballet and the new Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He teaches at Tufts University. Hartman is one of America’s finest trombonists and an active recitalist throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. He heads the trombone departments at Boston and Yale Universities.

Gaunt is active with numerous orchestras and has made national and international tours with several groups. He is a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts.

Zweifel is active as a performer and arranger. He is a founding member of Proteus 7 and a frequent guest of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops as assistant principal timpanist.

Proteus 7 will perform for the Durant Public Schools on April 12. The program is sponsored in part by grants from the Oklahoma Arts Council and Mid-America Arts Alliance, with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts.

There is no admission charge and the public is invited to attend.
