SOSU Symphonic Band to present final concert on April 30

The Southeastern Oklahoma State University Symphonic Band will present its final concert of the season, featuring composer James Curnow, on Monday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Montgomery Auditorium on the University campus. There is no admission charge for this concert.
Under the direction of David Christy, SOSU Director of Bands, the Symphonic Band will perform “Orpheus Overture,” by Jacques Offenbach; “Salvation Is Created,” by Tschesnokoff; “Piu Jesu from “The Requiem,’’ by Gabriel Faure; “Where Never Lark Or Eagle Flew,” by James Curnow; “Canticle Of The Creatures,” by James Curnow; and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.
Featured soloist on “Piu Jesu” will be Megan Crews, senior vocal music performance major from Lane. Crews has earned many honors throughout her tenure at Southeastern, including the Pablo Pedraza Scholarship, a silver medal at the Oklahoma NATS competition, and an appearance at the Schlern Music Festival in Schlern, Italy.
James Curnow currently resides in Nicholasville, Kentucky, where he is president, composer, and educational consultant for Curnow Music Press, Inc. of Lexington, Kentucky, publishers of significant music for concert band and brass band. He also serves as Composer-in-residence on the faculty of Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky, and is editor of all music publications for The Salvation Army in Atlanta, Georgia.
A graduate of Michigan State University, where he studied euphonium with Leonard Falcone and conducting with Dr. Harry Begian, Curnow has taught in all areas of instrumental music, including five years at the public school level and 26 years at the college and university level.
This concert is sponsored by the SOSU Musical Arts Series, supported by a grant from the Mid-America Arts Alliance “Meet The Composer” program.
