SOSU responds to Virginia Tech Tragedy

Press Release Date: 02-17-2007

“We are all deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at Virginia Tech,” said Southeastern Oklahoma State University Interim President Jesse Snowden. “Our thoughts and prayers are extended to all of those who have been affected by this tragedy.”

To show respect for the victims, Southeastern has lowered its flags to half-staff. In addition, on Thursday, the same day of the University’s annual observance of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building tragedy in Oklahoma City, an area will be set up in the atrium of the Student Union to allow persons to express their thoughts and feelings about the events at Virginia Tech. In remembrance of the victims, the University will distribute ribbons in the Virginia Tech colors of orange and maroon.

Thursday marks the 12th anniversary of the Murrah Building bombing that took 168 lives. The Student Government Association will set up a Field of Empty Chairs on the front lawn of Morrison Hall representing the Symbolic Memorial in Oklahoma City. The 168 chairs stand as a poignant reminder of each life lost. Please feel free to stop by and spend a few moments in reflection.

“We will continue to do everything possible in order to provide a safe campus environment at Southeastern Oklahoma State University,” Snowden said. “We are fortunate in that our campus police department is well-trained in responding to such emergencies. We have comprehensive emergency plans and procedures in place, and we are currently reviewing those. In view of the recent events, we are planning to provide additional training to our students, faculty and staff members in the very near future.”
