Southeastern Music Professor to Travel Abroad

Southeastern Oklahoma State University faculty members Dr. James and Betty Wintle will travel to Europe this summer to represent SOSU in two musical activities.
The first stop is Milano, Italy, where both will take part in the “Citta di Ovada” Festival as members of a jury panel which will award prizes and concert contracts to winners of competitions in chamber music and the performance of Schubert Lieder. Works by Dr. Wintle will be performed as part of the festival.
The next stop is Warsaw, Poland, where Dr. Wintle will be the guest composer at the famed Chopin Academy. He will present masterclasses in composition and hear performances of his works in the “Chopin to Groecki: Sources and Inspirations” Festival. Students and faculty come to Warsaw from all over Europe for a week of concerts, lessons and masterclasses.
The Wintles will leave July 7 on the two-week trip with one week in Italy and one in Poland.
Dr. Wintle said, “We are looking forward very much to this trip. We enjoy international travel and appreciate the opportunity to represent Southeastern in this way. In our 35-year career at SOSU, we have been given many chances by the University for travel and professional development.
“We wish to repay the confidence shown in us by representing SOSU in the best way possible. I like to think fewer people in various parts of the world must ask, ‘Now, where did you say Southeastern Oklahoma State University is located?’”
Dr. Wintle is a Professor of Music at SOSU, where he teaches courses in music theory and composition and also directs the Musical Arts Series. His activities also include coordinating the school’s Cultural Exchange Program as a part of the Steger Institutes.
He was born and educated in Kansas, earning his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas.
He has received numerous commissions from major ensembles, including the American Brass Quintet. He has earned grants and awards from many organizations and his work has been recognized by the State of Oklahoma with the Governor’s Arts Award.
His works have been performed in major recital halls, universities and museums nationwide and international performances include Europe, South America and the Far East. Several works were performed on a recent tour of the People’s Republic of China. Wintle is also active as guest composer and adjudicator in many international events.
