DURANT, Okla. – A familiar face will soon be returning to the campus of Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Keith Baxter, who served as the University’s head football coach from 2001-2004, has been named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. The announcement was made Tuesday morning by University President Michael D. Turner.

"Keith Baxter has all of the qualities we were looking for in an athletic director," President Turner said. "His reputation for honesty and integrity, along with his leadership abilities, propelled him to the top of our list of candidates. I believe that Keith shares our vision of the future success for our student-athletes, on the playing field, in the classroom, and in our community."

"Cathy Conway (Southeastern Director of Human Resources), who chaired the search committee, and all of her committee members are to be commended for their work during this process."

"I also want to recognize Cherrie Wilmoth, who over the past year, has done an exemplary job in her role of interim director of athletics. She is a tremendous asset to this University and will continue to play a key role in the department of intercollegiate athletics."

A native of Holdenville Oklahoma, Baxter was a standout quarterback at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where he earned bachelor and master’s degrees. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, and then moved to New Mexico State, where he served as defensive backs coach in 1987-88. Baxter joined the Southeastern staff in 1989 as offensive coordinator. He assumed the head coaching duties in 2001 and compiled a 25-16 record over his four years. His 2004 squad was the Lone Star Conference North Division co-champion and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs.

Baxter and his wife Teenie are the parents of two daughters, Ashley and Kaylie.

"Southeastern has always been like home to us," Baxter said. "I am looking forward to returning to the University in this role and I appreciate the confidence and support of President Turner. The people at Southeastern have always been special, and I think that is the University’s greatest strength. There are so many positive things happening at Southeastern and I am truly honored to be a part of it."
