Tell Us About Your Southeastern Experience!

Feburary 15, 2008

Southeastern wants to know what students say about their academic experiences at the university. To find out Southeastern is participating in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).

Look for the e-mail with the Subject line: SEOSU WANTS YOUR FEEDBACK!

A random sample of Southeastern freshman and senior students should expect e-mail surveys from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) over the next several weeks. The e-mail surveys will be sent to student e-mail accounts and personal e-mail accounts. The university is hopeful students will take the 10 – 12 minutes needed to complete the survey as the results are used for continual improvement of student learning and to enrich out-of-class educational experiences.

In 2007, Southeastern was one of over 600 universities participating in the NSSE. Nationally, more than 310,000 first-year and senior students completed the NSSE.

At Southeastern, 305 randomly selected Southeastern students completed the 2007 survey.

These are some of the preliminary findings that NSSE reported:

Academic Experience

  • 74% of first year students reported the university placed substantial emphasis on academics
  • 57% of first year students frequently discussed readings and ideas from coursework outside of class
  • 68% of first year students said their courses emphasized analyzing ideas, experiences, and theories
  • 71% of seniors reported working harder than expected to meet instructor’s expectations.

Enriching Educational Experiences

  • 49% of first year students said they frequently have serious conversations with students who are different from themselves in terms of their religious, political or personal beliefs. When asked about their community service
  • 39% of seniors reported that they had participated in volunteer work.

Overall

  • 90% of first year students reported a favorable image of Southeastern
  • 86% of seniors would choose Southeastern again if they could start their college career over
