Carter County
Carter County, in southern Oklahoma was once a part of Pickens County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. The county was named for a prominent early–day family, and the county seat is the city of Ardmore. The county is known for its 833 square miles that ranges from hilly, rugged terrain in the north to rolling plains in the south, that was once rich with oil. Healdton, located in western Carter County, was the site of the Healdton field which, at its peak in 1916 produced an estimated 95,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
