Physician Assistant

The requirements for physician assistant programs are different for the various schools. See Dr. Diane Dixon or Dr. Judy Williams for advisement for the various programs. Even though only 90 hours are required for most programs, most students have a bachelor's degree in biology before they enter the programs. Many of our students go to the University of Oklahoma. Even though only 90 hours are required for most programs, most students have a bachelor's degree (major biology, minor chemistry or double biology/chemistry major) before they enter the programs. Nursing

The requirements for nursing programs are different for the various schools. See Dr. Diane Dixon or Dr. Deborah Flowers for advisement for the various programs. Each program has additional requirements, but most programs have these common requirements:

  • English Composition I & II (ENG 1113, ENG 1213)
  • Introduction to Psychology (PSY 1113)
  • Introduction to Sociology (SOC 1113)
  • Microbiology (BIOL 2114 [BIOL 1404 is a prerequisite for this course])
  • Human Anatomy (BIOL 3624 [BIOL 1404 is a prerequisite for this course])
  • Human Physiology (BIOL 3614 [BIOL 1404 is a prerequisite for this course])

Additional requirements depend on the nursing program chosen.

Southeastern is now collaborating with East Central University for a nursing program. A student can take the general education courses and prerequisite courses for the ECU nursing program at Southeastern. The student can apply to the ECU nursing program at Southeastern and if accepted can continue taking the ECU nursing courses at Southeastern. Upon completion of the program, the student will earn a BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) from East Central University. The prerequisite courses are:

  • English Composition I & II (ENG 1113, ENG 1213)
  • Introduction to Psychology (PSY 1113)
  • Psychology of Childhood (PSY 3213) or Introduction to Human Development (PSY 2243)
  • Computers in Society (CIS 1003)
  • Math - one of the following:
    • Mathematics in Liberal Arts (MATH 1303)
    • College Algebra (MATH 1513)
    • Algebra for the Sciences (MATH 1543)
  • Statistics - one of the following:
    • Statistical Methods (STAT 2153)
    • Introduction to Sociology Research (SOC 3003)
    • Psychology Statistics (PSY 3313)
    • Biostatistics (BIOL 3914)
  • General Chemistry  I (CHEM 1315)
  • Principles of Biology I (BIOL 1404)
  • Basic Nutrition (BIOL 1133)
  • Microbiology (BIOL 2114)
  • Human Anatomy (BIOL 3624)
  • Human Physiology (BIOL 3614)
  • Introduction to Professional Nursing (NRSG 1142) - this is an ECU course offered at SOSU

A student will also need to take courses to fulfill the general education requirements for Southeastern.

After a student has taken at least 24 hours of the prerequisite courses, he or she would apply in the fall semester (September) to be accepted into the nursing program beginning in the spring semester.
