Textbook: Cutnell and
Johnson, Physics, 6th ed., J Wiley Publishers, 2004
Objectives: 1. To
provide insight into the fundamentals of mechanics, wave motion and sound*
2.
To develop problem solving and critical thinking skills through the
study of classical physics**
Grading System:
Evaluation Procedures
1. Unit
exams will be given at the end of each of the four units
Unit 1 (Chapters 1, 2, & 3) Unit 3 (Chapters 5, 8, & 9)
Unit 2 (Chapters 4, 6, & 7) Unit 4 (Chapters 10, 16 & 17)
Comprehensive final exam will be given during the final
testing period as listed in the course schedule.
2. Attendance
is not required, but encouraged. The
student is responsible for the material covered and assignments made if class
is missed. Attendance may help in
determining borderline grades.
3. Periodic unannounced quizzes covering the lecture and
reading material will be given at the instructor's discretion. There are no make-up quizzes.
4. Homework
assignments will be made by the instructor.
A due date will be given at the time of the assignment. At the discretion of the instructor, some
homework assignments will be collected and graded while other assignments will
be worked on the board for extra credit.
Collected homework must be handed in at the beginning of the
class period in which it is due for the student to receive credit. No late homework will be accepted.
5. Laboratory
is required for each student. A lab
manual needs to be purchased during the first lab period at a cost of $15. The lab experience will make up 25% of the
total grade for the course. No make up labs.
Scoring Procedures
100 - 90.0% . . . . . A
89.9 - 80.0% . . . . . B
79.9 - 70.0% . . . . . C
69.9 - 60.0% . . . . . D
59.9 -

This
percentage is the number of points a student accumulates during the semester as
compared to the total points possible.
Policies:
Ø
Attendance during testing periods is mandatory unless prior
arrangements are made with the instructor; otherwise, the missed test will
receive a zero grade.
Ø
Cheating (including copying homework and lab exercises) will
not be tolerated and will result in the
lowering of the student's grade or dismissal from the course.
ADA: Any
student needing special accommodations due to a physical, mental or learning
disability should contact Jan Anderson, the Coordinator for Student Disability
Services, Hallie McKinney, Room 111B or call (580)
