GRADUATE COUNCIL MINUTES

FEBRUARY 3, 1999, 3:00 P.M.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Dr. Karla Oty, (Chair) Dr. Walter Britt, Dr. Diane Dixon, Dr. James Knapp, Dr. David Hoelzeman, Dr. Jan Moore, Dr. Robert Oliver, Dr. Randy Prus, Dr. Larry Minks, Kelli Coyle (student), and Dr. Douglas N. McMillan (Liaison)

MEMBERS ABSENT: Dr. James Mitchell, Dr. Wayne Dixon, and Dr. Virginia Reasor

The meeting was called to order at 3:00 p.m. by Dr. Karla Oty.

The first item of business was to consider several nominations to the Graduate Faculty. The following faculty members were nominated as temporary graduate faculty for the Spring 1999 semester: Stanley J. Alluisi, Roy V. Drake, A. Jeanette Engles, Charla Hall, Mike Morris, and Stanley Rice. After a brief discussion a motion by Diane Dixon, seconded by Jan Moore, passed unanimously to accept the nominations. It was noted by the Graduate Council that Mike Morris needs to send an updated vita to the Graduate Office.

The second item of business was to consider faculty members seeking Associate Membership to the Graduate Faculty. A motion by Diane Dixon, seconded by Walter Britt, carried unanimously to accept the nomination of Virginia Davis as an associate member. It was noted that Ms. Davis' nomination form needs Dean Decker's signature.

The third item on the agenda was to discuss a motion that was approved by the Academic Council. The Academic Council was requesting verification on the interpretation of the following motion: A transfer student who enters Southeastern with graduate credit hours from another institution are not to be figured into the student's retention GPA if the course(s) are not part of the student's degree plan. It should be noted that the transfer course(s) and the cumulative GPA will not change on the student's official transcript. Therefore, the computation will be done manually to determine Graduate/Retention GPA for the purposes of Financial Aid, Probation/Suspension, and Major GPA. After some discussion, a motion by Walter Britt seconded by Bob Oliver passed unanimously to have only those courses in a student's degree plan count in his/her retention GPA regardless if the courses are transferred to Southeastern or taken at Southeastern.

The fifth item on the agenda was to discuss the completed faculty reviews for North Central. Dr. McMillan stated that there were four Graduate Faculty members whose vitae did not demonstrate that they had met the standards set by North Central. He explained to the Graduate Council that letters from himself and Dr. Robinson were sent to these individuals explaining that the credentials listed on their vitae are not sufficient in maintaining active status as a Graduate Faculty Member. The letters ask the faculty members to submit another vita with any updates that may have been mistakenly left off. The Graduate Faculty agreed to let the individuals resubmit a vita at which time the Graduate Council will again review the candidate's credentials. If the faculty member still does not meet North Central's guidelines, the faculty member will then be put on a one year probationary period. During the period, the faculty member will still be allowed to teach at the graduate level while fulfilling specific discipline requirements to meet North Central's Graduate Faculty Policy. A motion by David Hoelzeman, seconded by Jan Moore passed unanimously to send the letters to the four faculty members with notations of the appropriate modifications that need to be made. A motion by Diane Dixon, seconded by Jamie Knapp passed unanimously to allow a one year probationary period without the faculty member submitting a letter of plan to the Graduate Council. It was noted that the Graduate Faculty Nomination forms need to be updated to include a clause stating: Attention Department Chair and Dean: Please make sure the above nominee meets all accreditation policies specific to his/her area of discipline before submitting nomination to the Graduate Council.

The subcommittees were given their new assignments for the next group of faculty members to undergo "Periodic Review of Regular Graduate Faculty Members." A letter notifying the faculty members who will be reviewed this semester will be sent out February 8, 1999. The subcommittees will receive their packets by February 22, 1999. The results of the review will be discussed at the next Graduate Council meeting scheduled for March 24, 1999 at 3:00 p.m.

There was no new business. A motion by Diane Dixon, seconded by Jamie Knapp approved the minutes as read. The meeting adjourned at 4:20 p.m.
